Better WordPress Security

I've used Better WordPress Security a lot and do like the comprehensive way in which it tackles a broad range of prospective threats. Its evolution has been significant and rapid. Unfortunately, the new releases have been occurring at almost weekly intervals for the past couple of months. Upgrades sometimes culminate in a crisis on the site, such as 500 Server Errors. This issue is particularly problematic if you have WordPress running in a sub-directory! Such issues can only remedied by: * accessing the site via FTP * deactivating the BWS plugin by renaming or deleting the directory * editing the BWS code from the .htaccess file (or deleting .htaccess completely) Obviously, that's a pain in the proverbial, and is not an endearing aspect of the plugin! :-) If your WordPress installation runs from the root directory, BWS will give you peace of mind, but you will need a good understanding of WordPress, security issues, and confidence in WordPress tr...

How people view Websites Do you know what is the first thing that your eye is drawn to on a website? And in what pattern do people scan your website? There have been many eyetracking tests on this subject and I'll give you 14 most useful facts you should know. The picture below shows 3 different websites and where people look on them. Red indicates the area, where people looked the most, yellow areas got a bit less eye-action, blue areas got the least views and the gray areas, well, people didn't focus on them at all. As you can see, the more people scroll down, the more they lose focus and start mainly scanning your website. So always try to place the most important information in the top part of your website. Here are the 14 facts you should know on how people view websites: * People start viewing your website from the top left corner. * Readers ignore banners. Surprise, suprise. * Fancy fonts are ignored. * People only scan the lower p...

What is Bad Internet Website Content.

What is Bad Internet Website Content. This is generally a subjective assessment, but some or all of the following elements will be evident within the website: * Duplicated from your other website/s, and competing in the same web space. * Copied from a similar site and passed off as yours. * Homogenized content - finding a series of top-ranking pages from authoritative sources, and blending them together into a new page for your site. * More images than words, or words embedded in images. * Content generated by JavaScript, Flash or Frames. * Dominated by vaguely worded, non-explicit, warm and fuzzy drivel from branding and marketing pitches. * Word-for-word product descriptions copied verbatim from the manufacturer. * Lack of precisely targeted content that fails to fill a defined search need. * Doorway pages - specifically produced to target a series of keyword phrases but bereft of intrinsic merit. * Page and image file names are cryptic, d...

How to Steal Your Competitor's Secret Link Strategy

However, not all links are well-trusted by Google. For example, links from link farms and blog networks (Google-savvier link farms), paid links and other types of "illegal" links have been the focus of Google's war on link spam for a long time. But what if Google makes a mistake and treats your legitimately earned links as link spam? How does one know exactly what links are trusted by Google and which ones are frowned upon? The way out is to see what link building strategies your top-ranking competitors use and replicate those strategies! To do the job, one would need a backlink checker. Some folks argue that backlinks to a site can be viewed in one's Google Webmaster account, however, Google Webmaster Tools will only show you the backlinks pointing to your site, but will not disclose those of the competitors. To analyze competitors' backlinks, SEO's have long used Yahoo! Site Explorer, which ceased to exist on November 2011. H...

How Many Keywords are Too Many?

Let's say your main keyword is "snake leather shoes." Now, how many times can you safely repeat this keyword on your site without being considered a keyword-stuffer? It's not hard to figure out! See who ranks in the top 10 for that word and carefully analyze the following aspects of their site: * The number of keywords in page titles; * The number of keywords in site copy (in general); * The number of keywords in anchor texts. The number of keywords on a page as related to the overall amount of text is often referred to as "keyword density." Analyzing competition helps you understand what keyword density is worth high rankings in Google's opinion.
