How Websites Make Money Off of Us

How Websites Make Money Off of Us Here are 10 tricks that websites use to make money off of us: 1. Adware - As if your proclivity for shopping online isn't enough of a financial burden, now these websites are collecting your shopping info so they can sell you even more unnecessary stuff. I don't need someone keeping track of my spending habits, unless it's my accountant. And now that I think about it, I'm not really so sure about him either. 2. Pop-up ads - Sure, you can filter them out, or just close them yourself. for the most part; but then there are the ones that move around when you try to click on them, or activate an ad regardless of where you click the window. I honestly don't know how this seemed like a good idea for sales, but I guess it must work on some people because they just keep popping up. 3. Selling your personal info - Why does every e-merchant need to know that you've just purchased an ionic air humidifier for R1...

Avoid Duplicate Content Penalties

Avoid Duplicate Content Penalties Large search engines attempt to filter their search results by removing any results that duplicate the content of other search results. Such filtering is referred to as "duplicate content penalty". It is important to understand and identify what "duplicate content" actually is. Duplicate content is generally defined as substantive blocks of text that are copied from one site to another. Some webmasters try to use duplicated content in an attempt to manipulate and influence search engine rankings. The search community still occasionally debates the legitimacy and existence of duplicate content filters, but whether they exist today, or will exist tomorrow, is really irrelevant. Most webmasters have simply accepted the fact that the duplicate content penalty is currently enforced by at least some of the major search engines. With that in mind, how does the search engine determine which version of the cont...

Advanced SEO Techniques

Advanced SEO Techniques Alt attributes are a way to describe images to search spiders simply because search spiders cannot see them. It is not only an opportunity to add more content (with keywords) to your site, but it also helps your images to be searchable on Google. For best results, all images should also have distinct filenames. Alt tags were originally designed to be displayed as an alternative text to an image in cases when an image cannot be displayed in a browser. Also, alt tags are displayed when users rest their mouse on the image. 2. Title Tags A title tag describes an online document and has the most SEO power for establishing keyword relevance on the page. The Title tag appears at the very top of a browser or tab window, in search result pages, and external websites. At 59 characters or less (including spaces), the title tag should include a few relevant keywords and a company or brand name. Important keywords should be placed at the ...

Bundle Or Not To Bundle WordPress Plugins

I recently came across an article by Alex King regarding the "right way" to include a plugin into a theme. In it, Alex integrates a plugin called Social, available here, into a theme they sell called FavePersonal. I understand they want to provide a great user experience out of the box, but rather than integrating a plugin, why not just direct their user to install it from WP.org? You could even use conditional statements to limit certain functionality till it's installed. I respect his contributions and commitment to WordPress, but I highly disagree with the practice of bundling up plugins with themes. Why? To be as plain as possible about this, it's just not an encouraging practice for the development ecosystem we are a part of. Some theme developers today, particularly on marketplaces, tend to go overboard with this practice . Why does a "theme" really need a contact form builder, an event management system, an out of the box e...
