Write for Human Beings on Your Site

Write for Human Beings on Your Site The content on your static pages like home, about us, services and products needs to be compelling and written for a human being. Don't over SEO these pages by stuffing them with keywords, making them longer than they should be or linking every other word or phrase to another page on your site. Google won't like it and your visitors won't understand it. Google is smart enough to understand what the page is about if you write it well without having to drill it into their heads. Build Quality Links for the Right Reason

Build Quality Links for the Right Reason Like it or not you still need other sites linking to yours. It's one of those things that still stands at the core of the Google algorithm. That doesn't mean that you have to hire a link farm to create a bunch of spammy links. I know that's the easy way out, but experts don't take the easy way out just because it's easy. Start visiting blogs in and around your industry and start commenting on their posts. But here is the key - sound intelligent, create value and add to the conversations in all of your comments! This accomplishes a few things. It creates a link to your website on a like minded blog with a lot of valuable content. It also introduces you to a new audience that wouldn't normally have found you had you not said something that triggered them to want to check you out further. Social Media

Social Media Get out that flute and start practicing your pied piper routine. You need to be leading the charge towards a better tomorrow and social media is a great tool to get you in front of the proverbial room and preach your gospel. That doesn't mean to oversell, harass, annoy or "friend collect." It means to build a substantial community. Then be an outstanding member of that community. Be the one giving away tons of good information. Be the one that helps others get what they want. Be the one that is always accessible. Be consistent in your message. Eventually, they will hold you up as their expert. Give It Away

Give It Away Stop acting as though you are solely responsible for splitting the atom and that you can't share your secrets with anyone. You should be giving away as much content as you can through blog posts, e-books, webinars, videos, podcasts, seminars and workshops. Get your message out there so people will know who you are but more importantly so Google will know who you are. If you have hundreds or even thousands of pages of QUALITY content with your name all over it, isn't it safe to assume that you are going to be seen as a valuable resource by human and robot alike? Don't just take my word for it, in his post entitled "Where Should You Put Your Content," Chris Brogan puts it best in saying "I tend to put my content out here as a faith walk, I give away 90% and charge for 10% - it's the Open & Free Business Model I preach & teach." Write Extraordinary Content

Write Extraordinary Content You are not going to be able to get away with that same old regurgitated drivel if you want to be an expert. You are going to have to come up with extraordinary content on a regular basis. It's tough. Not everything you write is going to be a Pulitzer Prize wínner. We're all guilty of writers block or phoning it in every now and then, including me - I mean, have you seen this post? The important thing is that you can regularly get some wood on the ball and write a really valuable blog post, e-book, white paper, or case study that you can post on your website at least once or twice a week. The Future of Search: Google+

Google+ is a social network developed by Google to compete with the likes of Facebook and Twitter. While it is still early, there are signs that Google+ is showing an ability to compete with the other major social networks. If they are able to succeed in the realm of social media it will have a tremendous impact on the future of search. Google delivers you results based on many factors including your location as well as your search and browsing history. With the advent of Google+ it will become possible for them to deliver you results as personalized as the advertisements that Facebook delivers to their users. Facebook is able to show you such personalized advertisements because you willingly give them more information than you would ever give your boyfriend, girlfriend, husband, wife, you name it. This gives them a huge advantage and makes them an extremely valuable outlet for businesses looking to advertise their products or services. Google has seen the a

The Future of Search: Local, Local, Local!

Google in particular has put an emphasis on local results. Their goal is to deliver you the most relevant results based on your geographical location. Because you can tell Google exactly where you are at the time you are conducting your search, as well as the fact that they can do a pretty good job of pin-pointing your location on their own based on your IP address, searching for something like "pizza" has become as easy as, well, pie. pizza pie that is. When you search for "pizza" the results you see on the first page are almost exclusively local restaurants. You no longer have to include your city or town in the search query to receive local results. Google is able to do this not only because they have the most intricate and sophisticated search algorithm, but because their "Places" portal allows companies to tell them exactly where they are located, what services they provide, their hours of operation, the areas in which they

The Future of Search: Social Media

The creation of social media has arguably changed our lives more than even search engines have. Looking into the future we can envision a time where social media has a direct impact on the search results you see every day. We can envision this time in the future not just because we are omniscient, but also because Google has told us so. The idea that social media is eventually going to be the most important factor in which results are shown to you during a search is truly intriguing. For years Google has delivered results based on Page Rank. Page Rank, simply defined, is a ranking given to a particular webpage based on the number of quality links leading to it. In other words, the most important factor in how well a webpage was ranked was based on the number and quality of back links that a particular page had. Very soon that will all change. It is the goal of Google and the other search engines to deliver the most relevant search results possible. Becaus

Better WordPress Security

I've used Better WordPress Security a lot and do like the comprehensive way in which it tackles a broad range of prospective threats. Its evolution has been significant and rapid. Unfortunately, the new releases have been occurring at almost weekly intervals for the past couple of months. Upgrades sometimes culminate in a crisis on the site, such as 500 Server Errors. This issue is particularly problematic if you have WordPress running in a sub-directory! Such issues can only remedied by: * accessing the site via FTP * deactivating the BWS plugin by renaming or deleting the directory * editing the BWS code from the .htaccess file (or deleting .htaccess completely) Obviously, that's a pain in the proverbial, and is not an endearing aspect of the plugin! :-) If your WordPress installation runs from the root directory, BWS will give you peace of mind, but you will need a good understanding of WordPress, security issues, and confidence in WordPress tr

How people view Websites

How people view Websites Do you know what is the first thing that your eye is drawn to on a website? And in what pattern do people scan your website? There have been many eyetracking tests on this subject and I'll give you 14 most useful facts you should know. The picture below shows 3 different websites and where people look on them. Red indicates the area, where people looked the most, yellow areas got a bit less eye-action, blue areas got the least views and the gray areas, well, people didn't focus on them at all. As you can see, the more people scroll down, the more they lose focus and start mainly scanning your website. So always try to place the most important information in the top part of your website. Here are the 14 facts you should know on how people view websites: * People start viewing your website from the top left corner. * Readers ignore banners. Surprise, suprise. * Fancy fonts are ignored. * People only scan the lower p

What Defines Good Website Internet Content?

What Defines Good Website Internet Content? * Written by an authority on the topic, in his/her own words, and conveying valuable information to site visitors. * Defines a problem, proffers a solution and explains why you need it. * Research has determined the audience's needs, and the page is written for the specific viewer demographic. * Contains relevant exact-match keyword search phrases in current use. * Accurately and verbosely described in key areas (headings, titles, metadata). What is Bad Internet Website Content.

What is Bad Internet Website Content. This is generally a subjective assessment, but some or all of the following elements will be evident within the website: * Duplicated from your other website/s, and competing in the same web space. * Copied from a similar site and passed off as yours. * Homogenized content - finding a series of top-ranking pages from authoritative sources, and blending them together into a new page for your site. * More images than words, or words embedded in images. * Content generated by JavaScript, Flash or Frames. * Dominated by vaguely worded, non-explicit, warm and fuzzy drivel from branding and marketing pitches. * Word-for-word product descriptions copied verbatim from the manufacturer. * Lack of precisely targeted content that fails to fill a defined search need. * Doorway pages - specifically produced to target a series of keyword phrases but bereft of intrinsic merit. * Page and image file names are cryptic, d

What Is Internet Website Content?

What Is Internet Website Content? Content is made up of multiple elements, and is primarily the; * On-page visible text * Images and image Alt text * Anchor text in hyperlinks to internal or external pages * Hyperlink titles in links and menus * The descriptive Title and Description meta-data In the context of Google, a picture is NOT worth a thousand words! Moreover, words must be accessible, not embedded in images or Flash movies, JavaScript, slide shows etc. In 15 years as an SEO consultant, if there's one common denominator evident on websites, it's that there is a profound reluctance to expend time, money, and creative energy on unique text content. Brevity is the watchword - economical use of words is encouraged by design, branding and marketing advisers! * The branding gurus want you to use the textual equivalent of sound bites - bullet points and short sentences! * The website designers want the entire content of the page to be above

How to Steal Your Competitor's Secret Link Strategy

However, not all links are well-trusted by Google. For example, links from link farms and blog networks (Google-savvier link farms), paid links and other types of "illegal" links have been the focus of Google's war on link spam for a long time. But what if Google makes a mistake and treats your legitimately earned links as link spam? How does one know exactly what links are trusted by Google and which ones are frowned upon? The way out is to see what link building strategies your top-ranking competitors use and replicate those strategies! To do the job, one would need a backlink checker. Some folks argue that backlinks to a site can be viewed in one's Google Webmaster account, however, Google Webmaster Tools will only show you the backlinks pointing to your site, but will not disclose those of the competitors. To analyze competitors' backlinks, SEO's have long used Yahoo! Site Explorer, which ceased to exist on November 2011. H

How Many Keywords are Too Many?

Let's say your main keyword is "snake leather shoes." Now, how many times can you safely repeat this keyword on your site without being considered a keyword-stuffer? It's not hard to figure out! See who ranks in the top 10 for that word and carefully analyze the following aspects of their site: * The number of keywords in page titles; * The number of keywords in site copy (in general); * The number of keywords in anchor texts. The number of keywords on a page as related to the overall amount of text is often referred to as "keyword density." Analyzing competition helps you understand what keyword density is worth high rankings in Google's opinion.
